Earlier this week I was thinking about inspiration – what inspires me to write? Nature, friends, what I see in the world as I walk around – all these are the basis of many of my blog posts. Museums, too, inspire me, both to think and to create. When I am in a museum, I can get lost in an artwork, ebbing between the beauty of a piece and then, afterwards, studying the work – what can I see, what do I see. Whenever I spent time in galleries, I lose track of time. Half an hour can pass as if …
Space ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ Space (making) ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ Space-making. A few weeks ago I wrote about the roles of space in creative contexts, from art galleries to music to language to conversation. Space is a building block for rhythm., I wrote. This morning, I decided to write a blog post that was entirely space. I thought of the blog post as a place where you don’t have to read or do anything; where you can take a moment just for yourself. This piece takes on a new meaning when considered in the contex…
Raindrops cascade from the skies in straight lines, watering the ground left dry after July. Since the rain started falling again, the plant outside has been growing well. Will it blossom again this year? Can plants blossom twice in one year? I hope to see the pink petals again, but, if nothing else, I have the memories of its colours from earlier in the season. I went for a walk earlier today, before the rain began. I admired the puddles as I walked; collections of water after a dry season. I w…
What if the musical memories of songs last played months ago were not held in the muscles, but in the heart – the passion coming through with every E that follows C? The occasional B, played at just the right moment, adds depth. I love the moment of getting into a song: when the notes flow and you’re enjoying the music – the moments when nothing seems to matter but the note you hear, and what note you are going to play next. I like to try playing new notes to see if they work; maybe they d…
A few weeks ago, I started to re-think how I organise my writing. Previously, I kept my writing in three folders: Drafts, where I intended to keep all my drafts;Writing, where all my writing, including my drafts, ended up, and;My website, which contains the final, published versions of my writing. When I went to save a piece of writing, whether it was a draft, or something I was ready to publish, I would first save it in the “Writing” folder. When I was ready to publish a piece, I would copy…

The voice of the romantic midnight harkens; its calm tones echo through the day with the help of words. Is midnight romantic? I have been thinking about moments between: the transitions from one state to another. Yesterday, as I left the cafe from which I had purchased a coffee, I noticed how the sounds of the cafe receded into the background with every step I took, as the sounds of Nature and all that was around in my new environment took over. The echoes of new orders – lattes; morning fuels…
I close my eyes and see the Great Hall. This is where they host the Met Gala! I can’t help but think about that when I stand and watch as tourists congregate, ask for information, and walk around to get to the exhibits they want to see. There are at least three ways you can enter the main galleries: by walking forward, past the information desk, towards the decorative arts, sculpture, and more (or, if you take the stairs, to see European Art, photography; or by going left and right, each takin…
The shortest words — the most weight: I, a, (e)m.
The sun shines through the silvery sky. I look up and around to see where blue might peek through the blanket that covers the sky. There is one space where I can see shades of blue through the silver. I think about how the sky invites me to look up, and then around: to be curious. What can I see today? I do this in all seasons and skies. On the warmest summer days, my eyes focus on the contrast between the green hills and the blue skies. On the coolest, clearest winter days, where the beauty of …
My words flow from the blank, full, blue sky that rests above – a sky in which the more I look, the more texture I see; there are ripples and layers and colours; the periphery of individual clouds emerge. The more I look, the more I see. When I am in art galleries, I see something new the more I look at a painting. I might notice a particular detail that stands out, or a colour that I didn’t see on my first impression. With so much detail in an individual painting, it feels like there is alw…
With the window open and the breeze flowing through, I hear the calls and songs of birds. A calling pigeon in particular stands out. I love the calls of pigeons in the evening. The sound reminds me of childhood, looking out the window, onto Nature. A flock of birds fly by as the occasional person strolls down the street. While the sun set a little while ago, day is still here. A gust of wind moves the leaves across a big tree, and then the breeze settles down, and picks up again. I think about t…
I watched the movie "Valentines Day" (2010) for the first time today, which stars, among others, Taylor Swift. The energy in this scene (especially the enthusiastic and excited way in which the words are said, while Taylor carries a huge bear) 1 fills me with joy: [call out: "Save the Lattes!"] Taylor: They're putting lattes in the vending machines? Finally! Taylor: Robbie, I am so glad you are taking care of this. Robbie: You got it. Taylor: And, I like caramel lattes, just FYI. I am not a fan …
I hear the birds singing as I sit by the window and look out on the horizon. I like looking at all the colours of the sky in the moments after sunset, when ambers recede and the sky becomes ever more blue before night time. I hear the sound of my fingers typing on my keyboard, too: nature and words are my evening. Nature and words are my evening, and so too is music. Moments ago I was playing on the piano, two songs I love but haven’t played in as long as I can remember. And one more song that…
making notes and reviewing quotes, collected from day and night: here, there are stories. i revel in observing, and in place- making. where am i? how do i feel? what does this mean to me? i think of the melody of words their cadence and shape and tense and from all, i feel:. from words, wonder; with words, wonder.
in change, new beginnings – of stories and; what if.

In Camera, one of the songs on her latest album, CharliXCX sings: When the camera's on I can be anything that I wanna be And I can feel the things I don't normally feel When I heard these words, I couldn’t help but think about them from an art history perspective. Portraits create an image. Portraits can and have been used to express power, identity, occasion, the significance of a moment. So too can we create images with cameras: we get to decide how we pose for a selfie, how we frame the ima…
